How We Shot It

Lightning Panorama – How We Shot It

Matthew Saville

If you have ever tried to photograph lightning during the day, let me tell you it is not easy! What makes lightning so easy to photograph at night is 1.) The fact that you can very easily achieve long shutter speeds, and 2.) Lightning is usually the brightest thing in the sky at night.

Shooting air shows is the best situation (actually, the only) I shoot in for demonstrating the use of shutter priority mode. People often think that shutter priority is what you use to shoot fast action because you want to dictate a very fast shutter speed, when in fact most action sports photographers get the same result by simply shooting in aperture priority with their aperture wide open.

Vancouver Moonrise at Sunset – How We Shot It

Today I have a great example of "seeing the forest for the trees"... Sometimes, when something truly breathtaking happens right before your lens, you get caught up in the moment and don't see the big picture. This was one of those moments, and I almost missed it completely...

Panoramic Sunset Portrait – How We Shot It

Every sunset is different. However each year, there are a few of them that you remember forever! This was certainly one of those sunsets! How We Shot it – Environmental Portrait with Singer-Songwriter Sabrina

fotosiamo

This environmental portrait is part of an editorial assignment that I had for Sabrina Claudio, an up-and-coming young singer-songwriter from Florida. In an environmental portrait, the surrounding tells just as much of the visual story as the subject. The client also wanted the lighting to look natural, so the trick here is to add just enough ambient lighting to balance out the three Einstein monolight strobes that I used to light this image.

Dramatic Black & White Portraits [Getting The Shot – Episode 1]

Matthew Saville

Alright, it's time for a new series! Welcome to "Getting The Shot" with your camera-geek host, Matthew Saville. The goal of this series will actually be to explain (in a NON-geeky way) what goes into making a photograph. Instead of going crazy with techno-babble and assumptions of reader skill level, these articles will focus on three simple things:
