Some of you may recall a while back when Sony was doing a trade-in program where you would essentially trade in any working SLR or mirrorless camera and the value of that and then some would be deducted from the purchase of a new Sony. It was a resounding hit and I know for quite a few it was all the nudge they needed to finally lurch at a Sony A7 series. But like all good sales tend to do it came and went like a thief in the night, but Sony often brings the sale back on an annual basis.
Below are some of the recent trade in programs that Sony has offered. While this is not a complete history of the trade in programs/events, reviewing its history could help you make a sound decision on whether to purchase a Sony camera or wait for the next trade in event

In the link above you’ll find deals on Sony full frame and APS-C lenses with various filters bundled.
You can’t be faulted for viewing this promotion as a bid from Sony to not only convince their shooters to re-up with the Alpha system but, as one last attempt to convince any shooters from every other system to defect before the full revelation of Canon and Nikon’s full frame mirrorless cameras.
Sony 2018 Trade In Program
But now it’s back, and at the risk of sounding like a late night advert, it appears better than ever. Not only is the A9 now on the list for rebate incentive, but in conjunction with the trade-in program there are a number of Sony items on sale, some of which we are seeing a discount on for the first time, like the A9/A7Riii battery grip as well we the 12-24mm f/4.0.
Here’s how the trade-in program works:
The trade-in is a trifecta of incentives: At the moment there are significant instant rebates on some of the best Sony cameras and lenses like the A7RII and 70-200 2.8 GM, which are then combined with trade-in bonuses up to $500 depending on your purchase, and then of course there’s trade in value for whatever camera you’re trading in.
Depending on the combination of what you’re trading and looking to buy you could easily find yourself with $1,000 credit or more to a new Sony camera or lens, so if you were in the market, now would seem an opportune time – especially given the remarkable stuff Sony’s got on tap, from the A7 to the a6500 or A9.

Summer 2017 Trade in Event
The final weeks of August herald the waning of the summer season; a time of transition we expect every year. And like the seasons, a photographer’s tool kit, bringing with it new and refreshing elements. Sony’s summer trade-in event is here and is about the best time to grow or get into a Sony system.
If you’ve been sitting on camera gear that has grown long in the tooth and is a bit past its resale prime, this is a good opportunity to recoup some of that value from a reputable camera retailer. This isn’t the first time Sony has run a promotion like this and it demonstrates their eagerness to encourage Sony users to upgrade and pull users from other systems. This leaves only one question. Is this the right time for you to go Sony mirrorless?
Here’s how it works:
From August 13th through September 30th, there is a window of opportunity for those who’ve been eyeing an A7II or A7RII or A7SII, or even the venerable A9. You’ll be able to save $300 off of any of the Sony a7II series and $500 off of the Sony a9 by trading in select gear. You’ll receive the value of your camera trade-in + the additional savings towards your gear. So for example, if you were to trade in your Canon 5D Mark III in good condition you would get around $1000, then tack on another $500 towards an A9.
Sony’s new flag ship camera is still going to cost a good bit of money even with the trade in, but the savings on the A7II, which normally retails around $1,500 brand new for the body only, make this arguably the best deal for full frame camera currently running (See A7II review here). There is no better time to act than the present if you’ve been looking to jump into the world of mirrorless.
Spring 2017 Trade in Program
Sony’s trade-in events, when they happen, are a big deal. Â Essentially, you can trade in any working SLR or mirrorless camera where the value of it, and then some, would be deducted from the purchase of a new Sony. It was a resounding hit and I know for quite a few it was all the nudge they needed to finally lurch at a Sony A7 series.
It’s been back, better than ever, and is now once again about to close. The current trade-in event ends April 1st. It should be said too that it’s not just bodies, but lenses as well.
Depending on the combination of what you’re trading and looking to buy, you could find yourself with $1,000 credit or more to a new Sony camera or lens, so if you were in the market, now would seem an opportune time – especially given the remarkable stuff Sony’s got on tap, from the A7 to the a6500 or a99II.
The deal is essentially a trifecta of incentives: At the moment there are significant instant rebates on some of the best Sony cameras and lenses like the A7RII and Sony 24-70mm 2.8 GM ($300), which are then combined with trade-in bonuses up to $480 depending on your purchase, and then of course there’s trade in value for whatever camera you’re trading in. So that’s Rebate + Bonus While Trade-In Even is on + trade-in gear value.
