Get to Know Profoto A2

The Profoto A2 is a battery-powered monolight that checks all of the important boxes for photographers using flash, including power, portability, and reliability. The A2’s small size, about that of a soda can, makes it easy to pack and use on the go. In addition, its 400 full-power flashes at 100W on a single battery charge will give you enough power and time to light your subject through a full session. Furthermore, with a super quick recycling time of 0.05-1.3 seconds and a range of 100m (330ft) with remote control and TTL, the A2 will ensure you never miss a shot, even from a good distance away. Having reliable gear takes a lot of pressure off of us as photographers and removes the fear of not knowing whether or not our flash is going to fire when we need it to.

It’s also worth noting that the A2 is fully compatible with the Profoto system thanks to its built-in Bluetooth AirX technology, and it works perfectly with the full range of Clic modifiers for more light-shaping opportunities. With these modifiers, we can push our creative boundaries and more easily bring our vision to life.

Here’s a quick glance at the Profoto A2’s features:

  • Round head with soft, smooth, and natural fall-off
  • 100 Ws spread over 10 f-stops (0.1-100 Ws)
  • TTL and HSS for fast, beautiful, and professional results
  • Patented smart magnetic mount for Clic light shaping tools
  • Integrated LED modeling light
  • Compatible with Profoto AirX

Video: The Perfect On-Location Flash for Epic Destination Portraits featuring Profoto A2

Check out the video above to see the Profoto A2 in action on a destination shoot in Dana Point, CA. In addition to covering different techniques for capturing quality portraits, the video highlights the A2’s portability and power and shows firsthand how simple it is to capture epic portraits on-location with this setup. As the production footprint has shrunken over the years thanks to compact gear like the A2, what used to require an assistant (or two) can now be handled by one photographer alone. As Pye notes in the video, “I remember just a few years back, I was up in Yosemite, and I needed an assistant to help me get [my gear] up the mountain. Now, I’ve got my lighting stand, my A2, my camera and lens, everything I need, and I can do it on my own.” Specially designed gear like the A2 makes flash photography not only more accessible, but also more fun.

Meet Profoto Connect

The perfect companion for the A2, the Profoto Connect is a minimalistic trigger that is as easy to use as a point-and-shoot camera, as evidenced in the tutorial above. There’s no menu to navigate or buttons to push. Simply choose one of three settings, including auto, manual, or off, and then let the Connect do its thing. The settings are self-explanatory as auto mode automatically calculates the flash power you’ll need for an ideal exposure and manual mode allows you to manually dial in your settings via the Profoto Control app, which also features minimalist design. Here’s a quick glance at Profoto Connect’s features: Button-free trigger for all Profoto AirTTL products Small, lightweight, and minimalistic design Three modes – Auto, Manual, and Off Smart connectivity with the Profoto app USB-C Charging

Conclusion

From their line of powerful and portable strobes to their user-friendly and impactful modifiers, Profoto has raised the bar across the line when it comes to how portrait and wedding photographers control and use light.

For a limited time, pick up the A2 at a reduced price of $895, or grab the A2 Connect Kit bundle, priced at $995.
