Headshot Photography | Working With the Client’s Reaction With Peter Hurley

Hanssie

As promised, here is another gem from this week’s Photo Week 2015 on CreativeLive. If you’ve missed the courses from earlier this week, I’ll be highlighting a few of my favorites in the next few days. Photo Week concludes today, so you have one final full day of education that you can access for free, or you can purchase individual courses at a discounted price for the ones you missed. If you missed Pye’s course on Working With Flash, you can get it here.

Peter Hurley is an industry favorite and not just because he’s a cool cat that makes phrases like, “Shebang!!!” awesome, but because of the way he works with and interacts with his subjects. His natural charisma and ability to bring out the best in clients makes it fascinating to watch him work, and I always pick up a few tips. Below is a short video from his course on CreativeLive where he teaches you to capture amazing headshots. He shares his Hurley Headshot System and the 7 steps he takes to get the perfect headshot.

In the 3 minute video, he focuses on step 5  and how to get what he calls “the micro-expression.” This comes after he poses the client and checks to make sure their hair and clothing are not in disarray. He then engages with the subject and elicits a facial reaction. This way, you get a real expression for the headshot, and the client isn’t stiff or awkward. He demonstrates this at the beginning of the video and uses the rest of the video to explain.

To see the rest of Peter’s course, it’s now $39 but only for a couple more days, so grab it here before the price goes up!
